Late run holds
up as Louisiana-Lafayette gets past FIU, 1-0
ame
five of the 2002 Sun Belt Conference Softball Tournament featured
the last two undefeated teams before No. 1 Louisiana-Lafayette
beat No. 3 and host Florida International, 1-0, at University
Park.
The Ragin Cajuns advance to tomorrow's championship game at
1:30 p.m.
With the win, Louisiana-Lafayette improves to 48-11 on the
year, while FIU falls to 39-33. Now in the losers' bracket, the
Golden Panthers must beat the winner of the New Mexico State
vs. Middle Tennessee tonight at 6:30 p.m. in order to qualify
for Saturday's championship game.
Brooke Mitchell threw a complete game two-hit shutout,
for the Ragin Cajuns, striking out four. The game was scoreless
through five innings until ULL broke through in the sixth.
The Lady Cajuns loaded the bases with no outs off Golden Panthers
pitcher Amanda Nealer, two of those runners coming on
hit batsmen. Nealer struck out Missy Martin for the first
out, but Jill Robertson's sacrifice fly to center scored
Jerie Alexander with what proved to be the winning run.
"Having played one another for the fifth time this season,
both sides are familiar with one another," said ULL head
coach Stefni Lotief. "What made the difference today
was our pitching and defense."
