FIU takes Sun Belt Tourney opener, 5-1, over Western Kentucky

n game two of the 2002 Sun Belt Conference Softball Tournament, No. 3 Florida International defeated No. 2 Western Kentucky 5-1 at University Park.

The Golden Panthers will advance to the second round to face Louisiana-Lafayette-Middle Tennessee winner tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.

With the win, FIU improves to 39-32 on the year, while WKU falls to 37-22. The Hilltoppers will play an elimination game tomorrow at 11 a.m. (ET) against New Mexico State.

Vanessa Preston threw a complete game for her 14th win of the season for the Golden Panthers. FIU shortstop Stephanie Wolter went three-for-four, including a three-run double she turned into a home run after WKU's Jessie Richardson tripped in the outfield.

"Preston threw an outstanding game for us," said FIU head coach Kim Gwydir. "We're happy to win the first game, with Wolter having a terrific game at the plate."
