FIU takes Worth Classic third-place game with 7-1 win over LIU

IU's bats finally came to life as the Golden Panthers (6-14) took third place at the Florida Atlantic Worth Classic Sunday afternoon in Boca Raton with a 7-1 win over Long Island University (3-4).

The Golden Panthers banged out 11 hits for a season high and their seven runs tied a season best, accomplished in the fourth game of the season against Illinois State.

Amanda Nealer (6-4) and Nicole Barrett combined on a three hitter and Stephanie Wolter had three hits in her first three at bats of the game, giving her six straight safeties over a two-game span.

Wolter had a hand in the first four FIU runs on the afternoon. In the first inning, she singled to lead off the game, stole second base and scored when LIU threw away an attempted sacrifice bunt by FIU's Nicole Dubovik.

FIU adds two more runs in the third on a Meagan Dontrich opposite-field triple and a Wolter's single. She would later cross the plate on a fielder's choice. One inning later, it was Wolter again, this time with a two-out triple that scored Amber Gill.

The Golden Panthers added three insurance runs on five hits in the seventh inning. Dubovik manufactured the first run with a single, steals of second and third base and scoring on an LIU error A Lindsay Tippings double and Gill single produces the other two runs.

Nealer went the first four innings, charged with the LIU run on two hits. After allowing a leadoff single to Margie Foster leading off the fifth inning, Barrett took the mound in relief. A wild pitch moved Foster to second base; she moved to third on a single by Alissa Villanueva and scored on Barrett's second wild pitch of the inning.

But FIU's freshman hurler settled in from there and picked up her second save of the year with three innings of one-hit relief.

LIU starting pitcher Crystal Eubanks (3-1) suffered her first loss of the season, lasting five innings and allowing four runs on five hits.

The Golden Panthers return to the diamond this coming Wednesday, Feb. 26 for a single game against Furman beginning at 7:00 p.m.
