FIU splits a pair at Worth Classic
he
FIU softball team (5-12) split a pair of games Friday at the FAU Worth Classic
in Boca Raton, beating Wisconsin, 1-0, and losing to LIU, 4-2.
In the opener, the Golden Panthers stopped a five-game losing streak with
a 1-0 win over Wisconsin (6-4). FIU pitchers Amanda Nealer
and Kendra Laminack combined on a one-hitter and Cindy
Turek drove home the only run of the game on a two-out double in
the sixth inning.
Nealer (5-3) pitched the first five innings, allowing a hit while striking
out 11, while Laminack hurled a perfect two innings of relief. Turek’s
RBI was her team-leading 10th of the season. She and Nicole Dubovik
had two hits a piece.
Wisconsin’s Andrea Kirchberg (4-3) was the hard-luck
pitcher for the Badgers, going the distance with 11 strikeouts.
In the nightcap, FIU jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first
inning when Jennifer Owens brought home Stephanie Wolter
and Dubovik with a two-run double.
But LIU (2-2) countered with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the
first inning off Golden Panthers freshman hurler Nicole Barrett
(0-4).
FIU takes on Rutgers and No. 1-ranked UCLA when play resumes Saturday afternoon
at 1:00 p.m.
