Softball dominates
opening day of GRU Classic
IU
takes two in the opening day of the GRU Classic in Gainesville,
FL.
In the first game, the Golden Panthers defeated South Florida,
6-4, earning all six run in one inning. The second inning FIU
hit seven singles and then held off a Bull rally late for the
win.
Crystal Boyer drove in two runs, while Kendra Laminack
earned the victory in relief.
In the night game, FIU shutout the host Florida Gators, 4-0.
Amanda Nealer pitched a two-hit shutout for the complete
game win.
The Golden Panthers wasted no time in building a lead against
the Gators, with Jennifer Owens singling to left center
to score Kelly Nicosia with one out in the first inning
to give FIU a 1-0 lead. FIU scored an inning later when Florida
pitcher Amanda Moore hit Dubovik with the bases to score Kristen
Perry.
Perry would bring in FIU's final two runs in the third inning
with a two- out double to left center, bringing in Stephanie
Wolter and Leslie Gillen. Gillen finished the game
2-for-4, and second baseman Laura Hanstein also contributed
for FIU by going 2-for-3.
FIU will play North Carolina on Saturday, followed by seeding
in the night games. Sunday will be the consolation/championship
game of the GRU Classic. |
