Softball dominates opening day of GRU Classic

IU takes two in the opening day of the GRU Classic in Gainesville, FL.

In the first game, the Golden Panthers defeated South Florida, 6-4, earning all six run in one inning. The second inning FIU hit seven singles and then held off a Bull rally late for the win.

Crystal Boyer drove in two runs, while Kendra Laminack earned the victory in relief.

In the night game, FIU shutout the host Florida Gators, 4-0. Amanda Nealer pitched a two-hit shutout for the complete game win.

The Golden Panthers wasted no time in building a lead against the Gators, with Jennifer Owens singling to left center to score Kelly Nicosia with one out in the first inning to give FIU a 1-0 lead. FIU scored an inning later when Florida pitcher Amanda Moore hit Dubovik with the bases to score Kristen Perry.

Perry would bring in FIU's final two runs in the third inning with a two- out double to left center, bringing in Stephanie Wolter and Leslie Gillen. Gillen finished the game 2-for-4, and second baseman Laura Hanstein also contributed for FIU by going 2-for-3.

FIU will play North Carolina on Saturday, followed by seeding in the night games. Sunday will be the consolation/championship game of the GRU Classic.
