No. 17 Georgia beats FIU,
5-1, for Diamond Sports Classic championship victory

pitcher and tournament MVP Michelle Green tossed her third
complete game of the weekend, as the No. 17-ranked Bulldogs (5-0)
defeated FIU, 5-1, in the championship game of the Diamond Sports
Fun & Sun Classic at University Park.
Green (3-0), who scattered six hits and struck out 10, got
all the support she needed in a three-run third inning, which
included a two RBI single by Ashley Godfrey and another
run-scoring base hit by teammate Courtney Knight.
FIU (2-3) closed the gap by one in the next half inning. Nicole
Dubovik opened the frame with a single down the right field
line and scored on a two-out base hit by Jennifer Owens,
marking the only run allowed by Green in 21 innings of work this
season. For Owens, it was her third RBI of the weekend and raised
her team-leading batting average to .438 for the young season.
But Georgia added insurance runs in the fourth and fifth innings
on Michelle Tyree's second home run of the tournament
and another run-scoring single by Godfrey.
FIU's Kendra Laminack (0-2) took the loss, lasting
just 2.1 innings and allowing two runs on five hits.
In the consolation game, Illinois State (2-3) came back from
a 3-1 deficit late, and beat Kentucky (1-4), 4-3, in extra innings.
The Wildcats Rachel Friberg drove in all three runs with
a sixth inning home run, but Illinois State tied the game with
two runs in the bottom of the seventh, the won the game in the
eighth when a sacrifice fly plated pinch runner Mandy Garner.
