FIU defeats Illinois State falls to No. 17 Georgia in day one of Fun & Sun Classic

eorgia picked up wins over Kentucky and host Florida International to go 2-0 and grab the early edge in day one of the 2003 Diamond Softball Fun & Sun Classic.


NO. 17 GEORGIA 3, FIU 1

Box Score

Georgia third baseman Michelle Tyree hit a two-run homer to lift the 17th-ranked Bulldogs over Florida International, 3-1.

With the game tied at 1-1 with one out in the top of the sixth, Bulldog shortstop Ashley Godfrey singled up the middle. Tyree then went long over the left field fence on a pitch from FIU's Kendra Laminack to give her team the victory.

Georgia pitcher Lacey Gardner (0-1) scattered three hits in seven innings to pick up the win. Laminack allowed seven hits and three earned runs in five and one-thirds innings.

FIU falls to 1-1 on the year while Georgia improves to 2-0.

FIU 4, ILLINOIS STATE 1

Box Score

Florida International picked up an early lead with three runs in the second as the Golden Panthers won their season opener, 4-1, over Illinois State.

Shortstop Stephanie Wolter batted 2-for-3 with an RBI while third baseman Jennifer Owens went 2-for-3 and first baseman Marleah Stapf connected on 2-of-3 at bats.

Golden Panther hurler Amanda Nealer (1-0) earned the win, scattering three hits in five innings. Nicole Barrett entered the game in the sixth to pick up the save.

The Redbirds' Audra Rast (0-1) allowed five hits and three earned runs while Sheila Emms allowed one earned run in one inning of action.

ILLINOIS STATE 8, KENTUCKY 1

Box Score

Illinois State used a five-run first to jump on top of Kentucky and never looked backbird , handing the Wildcats an 8-1 loss in the season opener for both teams.

ISU hurler Corey Harris (1-0) scattered three hits in seven innings to pick up her first win of the season. Eight different Redbirds connected for a hit while third baseman Serena Cruz went 1-for-3 with a double and three RBI.

The Wildcats' Amy Kendall (0-1) suffered the loss.

NO. 17 GEORGIA 5, KENTUCKY 0

Box Score

Pitcher Michelle Green struck out 12 en route to setting a Georgia single-game record as the Bulldogs shut out Kentucky, 5-0.

Green (1-0) also batted 2-for-3 with an RBI while second baseman Katie Lewis went 1-for-3 and knocked in a pair of runs.

Kentucky hurler Becky Abner (0-1) went the distance, allowing four hits and three earned runs. The Wildcats dropped to 0-2 on the year.
