Women's Tennis, Track & Field
to compete for weekend championships

ournament weekend continues for FIU athletic teams as women's tennis competes Friday in the NCAA Regional Tournament in Gainesville and the Golden Panthers men and women's track and field squads participate at the Sun Belt Conference Championships in New Orleans.

In an all state-of-Florida regional in Gainesville, the Golden Panthers No. 35-ranked tennis team (18-6) meets cross-town rival and No. 32 Miami (14-6) at 10 a.m. while top-ranked Florida (19-1) takes on UCF (11-11) at 2 p.m.

The winners meet Saturday, May 11 at 4:00 p.m. for the regional crown and the victor of that match moves on to the Round of 16, Thursday, May 16 in Stanford, Calif.

The nation's No. 42-ranked doubles team of seniors Anneliese Rose (Boynton Beach, Fla./Atlantic H.S.) and Cristina Campana (Quito, Ecuador) leads FIU with a 23-9 overall record this year. In singles, Campana puts a 16-match win streak on the line, not having lost since last Feb. 10, after she starting the year with a 1-3 record.

Earlier this year, the Golden Panthers fell to UM, 6-1, at University Park. Miami owns a 9-1 series lead since FIU advanced into the Division I ranks in 1988.

FIU is making its second-straight NCAA appearance under former UM All-American Ronni Bernstein who has led the program to 95 wins over the last six seasons.

In track and field, the FIU women are predicted to finish fifth and the men, seventh according to a coaches' poll released Thursday at Tad Gormley Stadium in New Orleans through Sunday. Coaches picked the Middle Tennessee men and women's teams to take home the league titles.

FIU will be led on the women's side by Vronique Wilson (Ft. Lauderdale/Boyd Anderson) who is the only SBC woman to run under 24 seconds in the 200 meters this season. Wilson has already provisionally qualified for the NCAAs in that event with a time of 23.42.

Wilson was voted the Most Outstanding Female Track Performer at the SBC Indoor Championships last Feb. She won the 55-meter and 200m dashes, setting a new 200m meet record in the process with a time of 23.72 that broke the old mark previously held by former FIU All-American and Olympic medal-winner Tayna Lawrence.
