Men's Soccer Overpowers
Oneonta State
enior
striker Matias Asorey posted his second career hatrick as Florida
International blanked conference-foe Oneonta State, 5-0, in Atlantic
Soccer Conference action Friday night at University Park.
The Golden Panthers' five-goal assault started in the 65th
minute when Bobby Boswell's header shot across the goal and met
a streaking Asorey, who rammed it into the back of the net. Asorey
opened fire twice in the 71st minute, netting a cross from Juan
Rivera at the 70:00 mark. Forty-four seconds later, he pounced
on a lazy pass made by Red Dragon goalkeeper Jack Potter and
chipped the ball over the retreating Potter's head.
Billy Boswell kept the scoring going when he knocked in a
cross from Oscar Gil in the 74th minute while rookie Sean Collins
closed out the offensive outburst in the 85th minute when he
netted a pass from Paul Kolovos.
The Golden Panthers outshot Oneonta State, 15-5, as the FIU
defense held the Red Dragons to one second-half shot. Oneonta
State midfielder Ryan Rummery put FIU goalkeeper Roy Rosenberg
to the test on three occasions in the first half, but Rosenberg
was able to get his hands on all three attempts.
Asorey's hatrick was his first since Nov. 17, 2001, when he
netted three goals against then-No. 19 South Carolina. Two of
his goals in that contest were penalty kicks.
The victory was the sixth straight for FIU and improved the
squad's record to 6-4-0, 1-0-0 ASC. The Red Dragons fell to 4-6-1,
1-1-0 ASC.
FIU's next match will be on the road at Philadelphia next
Friday at 4:00 p.m. Oneonta State will face Central Florida at
a neutral site, FIU's University Park, Sunday at 10:30 a.m. |
