into tonight's match with Western Kentucky, the FIU men's soccer
team knew it was better than its losing record led one to believe.
A convincing 3-0 victory over Western Kentucky at University
Park may have proved the squad's case.
FIU forward Matias Asorey helped make the Golden Panthers'
case in the 33rd minute when he rifled a blistering shot from
the left corner of the penalty box past the WKU defense and into
the upper right corner of the net. It was Asorey's fourth goal
of the year and the third-straight contest in which he has scored
FIU's second goal came in the 65th minute when John Pulido
isolated his defender in the right corner and threaded a cross
through the Hilltopper defense and to the feet of Juan Rivera
who in turn tapped it to Hendrix Emanuel who found the back of
the net.
The Golden Panthers ended the evening's scoring in the 76th
minute when a Roy Rosenberg punt skidded its way to the feet
of Oscar Gil who raced past his defender and came away victorious
in a one-on-one with WKU goalkeeper Daryl Sattler.
In a game marred by heavy rain, the Hilltoppers could not
sustaining the Golden Panthers pressure in the offensive third
of the field as FIU unleashed 28 shots on Sattler - 16 of which
were on goal.
In contrast, Rosenberg, the Golden Panthers' goalkeeper, recorded
eight saves to preserve his first shutout of the year.
The victory was the second in a row for the Golden Panthers
and improved FIU's record to 2-4-0. WKU dropped to 4-2-1.
FIU continues its five-game homestand next weekend when the
Golden Panthers host the 2002 FIU Umbro Classic on Friday and
Saturday at University Park. Participating teams include FIU,
Columbia, Florida Atlantic and West Virginia. |
