FIU wins Umbro Classic with
2-0 win over Florida Atlantic
wo
first half goals were more than enough as the FIU men's soccer
team tossed its second consecutive shutout, this time, 2-0, over
Florida Atlantic (2-5-0) Sunday afternoon at University Park.
With last Friday's 1-0 win over Santa Clara, the Golden Panthers
won the championship this weekend's Umbro Classic.
Matias Asorey scored from 15 yards out after taking
a pass from Ezequiel Romero at 7:36 for a 1-0 advantage.
The Golden Panthers (3-4-0) made it 2-0 at 24:47 when Romero
this time found Alvaro Aservi at the top of the box on
a crossing pass.
Roy Rosenberg completed his second consecutive shutout
of the weekend and third of the season, having to make only two
saves. Following the match, Rosenberg was selected as the Umbro
Classic Defensive MVP.
FIU outshot the Owls, 24-9, as the Golden Panthers played
the final 34 minutes up one man after FAU's Gustavo Alencar
was whistled with his second yellow card of the match and
ejected from the match.
FIU had several more opportunities to score after that, but
four goalkeeper saves by the Owls' Jonas Kolstad and two
shots that bounded off the post, short-circuited the advantage.
In the first game of the afternoon, Santa Clara (4-4-0) got
goals from Jamil Walker and Philip Johnson as the
Broncos snapped a two-game losing streak with a 2-0 victory over
James Madison (4-3-0). The win earned Santa Clara the team runner-up
trophy at the Umbro Classic and Walker was selected as the Offensive
MVP by a vote of the head coaches.
FIU opens defense of its Atlantic Soccer Conference championship
beginning next weekend when the Golden Panthers travel to Oneonta,
N.Y. fro ASC matches at Oneonta State (Oct. 5) and Hartwick (Oct.
7). The Golden Panthers return home on Friday, Oct. 19 for the
league home opener against Philadelphia University. |
