Early goal, stingy defense
sinks Santa Clara, 1-0
illy
Boswell scored midway through the first half after taking
a rebound off a defender and the Golden Panthers defense dug
in to preserve a 1-0 victory over Santa Clara (3-4-0) in the
opening round of the Umbro Classic Friday night.
Playing most of the match in a light drizzle, Boswell's goal,
his first of the season, came at 35:07 as FIU (2-4-0) won for
the second time in its last three matches.
FIU goalkeeper Roy Rosenberg recorded his second shutout
of the season with eight saves in a duel against SCU and U.S.
under-18 National Team keeper Steve Cronin who was making
his first collegiate appearance.
Cronin allowed the one goal and made five saves before being
replaced in goal by teammate Rusty Johnson with 10:09
remaining in the match. Cronin resurfaces several minutes later
as a midfielder but was a non-factor.
Santa Clara out shot FIU in the game, 15-12, and seemed to
gain momentum late, but misfortune and Rosenberg thwarted the
effort.
Philip Johnson came off the bench and struck five of
the Broncos shots including one that hit the right post in the
75th minute, then three minutes later missed high from close
range.
"I was pretty happy with tonight's effort," said
FIU head coach Karl Kremser. "The defense seems to
be getting better and Roy (Rosenberg) did a good job considering
the weather."
In the opening game of the evening, James Madison won its
fourth straight match with a 1-0 defeat of Florida Atlantic.
Andrew Rutledge's second goal of the season was the only
offense of the match. He took a pass from teammate Patrice
Filin through the defense and beat FAU goalkeeper Jonas
Kolstad, one-on-one, at 64:26.
When the Umbro Classic resumes Sunday afternoon, James Madison
(4-2-0) will play Santa Clara at 12:30 p.m. (ET). FAU (2-4-0)
takes on host FIU at 3:00 p.m. |
