Men's Soccer falls to Marshall, 3-2

yron Carmichael scored a pair of goals, his 11th and 12th of the season, as Marshall handed FIU a 3-2 men’s soccer loss Sunday afternoon in the FIU Classic at University Park. Marshall improves its record to 6-1, while FIU fell to 1-4 on the campaign.

In the opening match of the day, Indiana-Purdue Indianapolis defeated UCF, 1-0.

The Golden Panthers captured the early lead when Bobby Boswell scored after a free kick at 16:21. But Carmichael tied the match when he broke through the defense, beat FIU goalkeeper Roy Rosenberg and scored into the open net.

Carmichael then put Marshall on top at 72:29 when he took a corner kick from Grant Wortz and scored on a header. That goal was the 40th in the career of Carmichael who broke the previous Marshall career record of 39 held by Andy Zulauf (1981-1985).

The Herd added an insurance goal at 84:42 when Firas Al-Samarraire converted a direct free kick from the top of the penalty box.

FIU closed to within 3-2 with less than a minute to play when Matias Asorey picked off an inadvertent clearing pass by Marshall goalkeeper Jeremy Williams and scored from eight yards away.

The Golden Panthers had 23 shots on the afternoon, but only seven were on goal. One of those came in the 59th minute on a direct free kick when Boswell’s shot hit the cross bar and bounded away. The Herd made the most of only eight shots on the day.

“We played well at the beginning but we let them back into it,” said FIU head coach Karl Kremser. “But it’s all a matter of heart. We had our chances but everyone seems to be looking for that perfect shot.”

In the opener, IUPUI’s Matt Hodges scored on an assist from Ben Higgingbotham at 86:05 in a 1-0 win over UCF. The Jaguars moved to 4-2 while UCF lost its second straight and fell to 4-2.

The UCF offense out shot IUPUI, 23-6, but Jaguars goalkeeper Armando Femia picked up the shutout with eight saves.

Central Florida missed a golden opportunity to score first when Daniel Berhane was tackled in the penalty box and awarded a penalty kick in the 71st minute. But his PK hit the post and the opportunity was thwarted.
