Men's Soccer beats IUPUI,
2-0, for first win of season
After
dropping its first three games of the season on the road, the
FIU mens soccer team triumphed in its home opener, 2-0,
Friday night over IUPUI in the opening round of the Golden Panthers
Classic. FIU improved to 1-3 on the season while the Jaguars
fell to 3-2.
After a scoreless first half, FIU finally cracked the scoring
column when Rafael Reyes converted from close range on
assists by Billy Boswell and Damien Rose, at 72:14.
Oz Hadary made the score, 2-0, when he raced down the field with
the ball then beat IUPUI goalkeeper Armando Femia with
an unassisted score at 80:15.
FIU dominated play, outshooting the Jaguars, 25-5, on the
night. The Golden Panthers sophomore goalkeeper Roy Rosenberg
earned the shutout in his FIU debut, having to make only two
saves.
"We made a much better effort. We battled," said
FIU head coach Karl Kremser. "Ive been working
them hard over the last couple of weeks, yet no one complained
and tonight I saw a couple of our kids step up. Defensively we
did a better job. Roy did a very calming job out there."
In the first game of classic play, Marshall (5-1) defeated
UCF (4-1), 4-0. Highlighting that match was Byron Carmichael
who tallying his 10th goal of the season, unassisted, at 48:11.
Carmichael leads the MAC in goals and needs only two more to
break Marshalls career record of 39 held by Andy Zulauf
(1981-1985).
The classic continues Sunday with new game times. Central
Florida plays IUPUI at 11:00 a.m. followed by FIU and Marshall
at 1:00 p.m. |
