Men's Soccer beats IUPUI, 2-0, for first win of season

After dropping its first three games of the season on the road, the FIU men’s soccer team triumphed in its home opener, 2-0, Friday night over IUPUI in the opening round of the Golden Panthers Classic. FIU improved to 1-3 on the season while the Jaguars fell to 3-2.

After a scoreless first half, FIU finally cracked the scoring column when Rafael Reyes converted from close range on assists by Billy Boswell and Damien Rose, at 72:14. Oz Hadary made the score, 2-0, when he raced down the field with the ball then beat IUPUI goalkeeper Armando Femia with an unassisted score at 80:15.

FIU dominated play, outshooting the Jaguars, 25-5, on the night. The Golden Panthers sophomore goalkeeper Roy Rosenberg earned the shutout in his FIU debut, having to make only two saves.

"We made a much better effort. We battled," said FIU head coach Karl Kremser. "I’ve been working them hard over the last couple of weeks, yet no one complained and tonight I saw a couple of our kids step up. Defensively we did a better job. Roy did a very calming job out there."

In the first game of classic play, Marshall (5-1) defeated UCF (4-1), 4-0. Highlighting that match was Byron Carmichael who tallying his 10th goal of the season, unassisted, at 48:11. Carmichael leads the MAC in goals and needs only two more to break Marshall’s career record of 39 held by Andy Zulauf (1981-1985).

The classic continues Sunday with new game times. Central Florida plays IUPUI at 11:00 a.m. followed by FIU and Marshall at 1:00 p.m.
