No. 16-ranked Clemson roll
over FIU, 7-1
he
16th -ranked Clemson men's soccer team defeated FIU, 7-1, Friday
in the opening round of the Umbro/Spinx Furman Invitational in
Greenville, S.C. Clemson improved to 2-2 while the Golden Panthers
fell to 0-2 on the year.
The seven goals allowed tied an FIU school record for most
scores allowed in a single match, duplicating a feat accomplished
by both Santa Clara and Indiana during the 1989 season.
Clemson jumped off to a 2-0 lead in the first half on goals
by Paul Souders and Ian Filler. Souders' led Clemson
with a pair of goals and an assist.
The Tigers made the most of 13 second-half shots, scoring
five more goals, all against FIU goalkeeper Wally Crittenden
(Houston, Tex./Clear Lake HS) who was making his first appearance
of the year.
The lone bright spot for the Golden Panthers came on the first
goal of the season by Ezequiel Romero (Hallandale, Fla./Hallandale
HS). Romero took advantage of a missed clearing opportunity by
a Clemson defender and scored unassisted at the 68:52 mark.
FIU returns to action against No. 5-ranked and host Furman,
Sunday at 2:30 p.m. |
