FIU can't overcome late
shooting woes in loss to Louisiana-Lafayette
IU
loses its fourth straight game against Louisiana-Lafayette, 65-60,
at Golden Panther Arena. It was the Golden Panthers fifth consecutive
game losing by seven points or less.
Taurance Johnson led all scorers with 18 points on
7-for-17 (41-percent) shooting and Chris Carter grabbed
nine rebounds.
Carlos Morban tied his school record of eight steals
and scored 10 points. Rodrigo Viegas added 12 points and
eight rebounds.
The Ragin Cajuns (14-8, 7-3 Sun Belt) were led by Michael
Southall's 17 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks.
FIU (10-16, 4-8 SBC) couldn't overcome its shooting woes,
going 2-for-18 from three-point range and 8-for-16 from the line.
The Golden Panthers went up 58-55 at the 7:28 mark in the
second half, after a dunk by Carlos Fernandez and free
throw by Slavcho Slavtchev. FIU wouldn't make another
basket until there was five seconds left in the game.
Louisiana-Lafayette could only muster eight points in that
span, as each team combined to miss 16 shots, while committing
five turnovers. Lafayette would commit 24 turnovers in the game,
as FIU had 12 steals.
FIU made a run to get back in the game to start the second
half. ULL went up 39-28 with 16:31 to play, when the Golden Panthers
went on a 30-16 run, that ended on a 9-0 stretch.
The first half was dominated by the Ragin Cajuns, holding
FIU to 27-percent (9-33) shooting, including 0-for-10 from beyond
the three-point line.
The Golden Panthers defense kept it from being a blowout in
the half, causing 11 turnovers to score 12 points.
FIU will head out west to face UNLV on Wednesday night at
10:35 p.m. |
