FIU loses in overtime to Duquesne, 71-68


IU loses in overtime to Duquesne, 71-68, in the championship game of the FIU/Hampton Inn New Year's Classic at Golden Panther Arena.

Eulis Baez recorded his sixth double-double on the year with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Al Harris matched Baez with 17 points on 8-for-11 shooting and was named to the all-tournament team.

Rodrigo Viegas was also named to the team, as he ended the night with 10 points and five assists. Viegas dished out 12 assists over the weekend.

The score was tied at 60 going into the overtime period. The Dukes (5-7) didn't commit a turnover in the extra frame and Duquesne's defense forced FIU (5-7) to miss its final three field goals.

After FIU went on top, 66-65, on two Junior Matias free throws, Duquesne hit two field goals by Ron Dokes and Simplice Njoya to spark a 6-2 run to end the game.

Matias scored 12 points on the night and had a game-high three steals.

The Golden Panthers shot 1-for-14 (7-percent) from beyond the three-point line, while the Dukes were 5-for-15 (33-percent). Duquesne was led by MVP Elijah Palmer's 17 points and eight rebounds. Palmer was a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond three-point range.
