overcomes lightning, Stony Brook, 6-3

In a wet night on St. Patrick's Day, FIU defeated Stony Brook,
6-3, at University Park. Sophomore Derek DeCarlo picked
up his third win on the season and is now 14-0 in two seasons
with the Golden Panthers (19-7).
Andrew Edwards started the game and pitched two shutout
innings, striking out two. DeCarlo took over from there, pitching
the next seven innings. The Southridge high graduate broke
the FIU record for consecutive victories with 14 (Willy Collazo
held the previous record of 13 set in 2001).
FIU started with two runs in the bottom of the first, as Skip
Adams tripled to right field, scoring Ricardo Nanita
and Adam Summerell.
The Golden Panthers continued their assault on the Seawolves
(4-3) with one more in the second, as Jimmy Bacon homered
to right center.
Stony Brook got on the scoreboard in the fourth. Jim McCurdy
singled in Rich Graham to bring the deficit down to 3-1.
FIU would respond in the bottom of the inning with two runs.
Jimmy Bacon scored on a wild pitch and Brian Aragon scored
on a double play. The Golden Panthers had five runs on three
hits through four innings.
Luis Rivera would end the FIU scoring in the fifth
inning, doubling to score Ricardo Nanita.
The game was delayed by rain and lightning for over an hour
in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Golden Panthers play again tomorrow night against Rutgers
at University Park. |
