Sanchez leads FIU to the 7-2 win over Miami
(OH)
IU (17-4) defeated Miami (OH) 7-2 Wednesday night at University
Park. Junior transfer Carlos Sanchez made his first start
as a Golden Panther pitching 7 1/3 innings allowing two runs
on eight hits. The win moves head coach Danny Price within
three games of the 900 career wins. The win also snapped the
Red Hawks six-game winning streak and gave the Golden Panthers
their seventh consecutive win.
In the first the Golden Panthers scored five runs. Alex
Ansoleaga walked to start the inning and scored as the bases
were loaded and Brad Elred was hit by a pitch. Hector
Nunez hit a sacrifice fly bringing home Adam Summerell.
Tommy Duenas followed with a RBI single down the right
field line scoring Bernie Gonzalez. Alex Suarez
added a RBI double scoring Duenas.
In the third Eldred hit his team leading eighth home run a
solo shot to left field to give the Golden Panthers the 6-0 lead
after three innings.
In the fifth the Red Hawks closed the lead with two runs.
Andi Scheiddt hit a RBI single scoring Jon Sloan and George Stegmiller
hit another RBI single for the 6-2 score.
In the eighth the Red Hawks attempted a rally loading the
bases with only one out. Sanchez was replaced by Matt Crandall
with the bases loaded. Crandall got Michael Carlin to fly
out to shortstop and struck out Ryan Edginton.
Dennis Diaz added another insurance run for FIU with
a RBI single in the eighth scoring Suarez to increase the lead
to 7-2.
The Golden Panthers will return to action tomorrow night as
they face their second consecutive Mid-American conference team
