FIU blanks Seton Hall 7-0
Box Score

The FIU baseball team shut out Seton Hall 7-0 at University Park Monday night in their second match-up in as many nights. Three Golden Panther hurlers combined to throw nine innings of three hit, no run baseball with 12 strikeouts.

Junior Andrew Edwards got the start for FIU, pitching three innings of scoreless ball while allowing two hits, two walks and striking out three. Junior Manny Monreal earned the win in relief, going four and a third innings and allowed just one hit and two walks while striking out six. Sophomore Derek DeCarlo finished the game, allowing no runs, no hits and no walks in a three strikeout performance.

The Golden Panthers scored first for the first time in five games, getting one run in the bottom of the first inning. The scoring play was set up by two walks issued to freshman infielder Bryan Pullin and junior outfielder Ricardo Nanita. At that point, senior outfielder Skip Adams singled to right field, scoring Pullin.

FIU added a run in the third inning when senior outfielder Adam Summerell knocked home sophomore infielder Dennis Diaz with an RBI single.

In the fourth inning, the Golden Panthers broke the game open with three runs to extend their lead to 5-0. Freshman infielder Luis Rivera started things off with a single down the right field line. After he stole second base, senior catcher Michael New doubled down the left field line to score him. New advanced to third on a wild pitch, and after Diaz walked, Pullin reached on an error, and New scored on the play. Diaz scored on another error on the very next play to make the score 5-0.

The game’s scoring came to a conclusion in the eighth stanza, as FIU scored two more runs. Three straight singles, coming from freshman infielder Mike Lopez, Rivera and New, respectively, loaded the bases. From there, Lopez and Rivera each scored on separate wild pitches to account for the 7-0 final.

The Golden Panthers next host Chicago State Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at University Park. The game will be broadcast on Radiate 88, FIU’s student radio station. The student broadcast can be heard on 88.1 FM in Miami or on the Internet at http://wrgp.fiu.edu/sports.
