FIU baseball blasts Pittsburgh 10-2
Box Score

The Florida International baseball team hammered the University of Pittsburgh 10-2 Friday night at University Park. Sophomore right-hander Josh Banks (3-1) got the start and win for FIU, going eight innings, striking out five, and allowing two runs and two walks.

Pittsburgh (9-4) took the early lead in the third inning when, with the bases loaded, Bryan Spamer hit a sacrifice fly to score one run. Mike Scanzano then hit an RBI single to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead.

The Golden Panthers went ahead in the fourth inning, 3-2. Senior outfielder Adam Summerell cracked a single to start the inning, and then freshman infielder Bryan Pullin hit a single of his own, which scored Summerell because of an error. Junior outfielder Ricardo Nanita, coming off a 3-for-5, two home run performance against Sacred Heart earlier in the afternoon, then tripled to score Pullin. After that, Nanita scored on a Skip Adams groundout. For the game, Nanita batted 2-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored.

In the sixth inning, FIU extended its lead to 8-2. Freshman outfielder Yahmed Yema singled to lead things off, then Nanita and Adams both singled to load the bases. Freshman infielder Luis Rivera then hit a sacrifice fly to score Yema. After Nanita scored on an error, freshman infielder Michael Lopez knocked in Adams with a base hit. Summerell finished the scoring in the sixth with a 2-RBI single.

The Golden Panthers added a run to their lead in the seventh, thanks to a Lopez RBI single. They then got their final run in the eighth when Nanita scored sophomore infielder Dennis Diaz on a fielder’s choice.

Lopez went a perfect 4-for-4 in the FIU win, knocking in two runs and scoring one himself. Like Nanita, it was the second good performance of the day for him, as he went 2-for-4 with two RBI against Sacred Heart. The Golden Panthers (15-5) next face Seton Hall (0-3) Sunday afternoon at 5:30 pm at Homestead, Fla. The game will be broadcast by Spanish Radio WRHC 1550 AM.
