Boston College hands FIU 10-3 defeat
oston College (4-3) defeated FIU (10-4) 10-3 Sunday afternoon.
The Eagles opened the score with a five-run eighth inning to
hand the Golden Panthers their fourth loss of the season. The
seven run margin was the largest defeat this season so far.
In the first Dean Adams doubled to left field and scored
on Hector Nunez' RBI double to left center to give FIU
the early 1-0 lead.
In the second Boston College scored twice to take the lead.
Vinny Scavone doubled and reached third as Matt Lederhos
hit a single. Scavone scored as Brian Durkin reached on
a fiedler's choice to tie the score. Jason Delaney's RBI
single scoring Durkin gave the Eagles the 2-1 lead.
In the bottom of fourth the Golden Panthers tied the game
on Adam Summerell's solo home run to left field.
In the sixth Boston College regained the lead on a two-run
home run by Scavone scoring Brian Macci who doubled to
reach base to give the Eagles the 4-2 advantage.
The Golden Panthers moved within a run in the sixth after
Tommy Duenas hit a sacrifice fly scoring Bernie Gonzalez
who reached on a double.
In the eighth Boston College's Neal McCarthy hit a
solo home run to right field to open the lead to 5-3. FIU starter
Michael Baluja was replaced by Carlos Sanchez in
the eighth after hitting Macci. Baluja finished pitching seven
innings allowing five runs on eight hits.
Boston College starter Mark Sullivan pitched 7.1 strong
innings allowing three runs on 12 hits before replaced by Chris
Lambert.
The Eagles scored five runs in the ninth to open the lead
to 10-3. McCarthy hit a RBI single scoring pinch runner Eric
Wright. Macci followed with a two-run single up the middle
scoring Marc Albano and McCarthy. Sanchez walked Durkin
with the bases loaded to bring in Macci and also walked in Scavone.
