Golden Panthers defeat Kansas State, 9-3

o. 25 FIU (9-3) defeated Kansas State (4-3) 9-3 in the first match-up between the two schools in the Homestead Challenge. FIU starter Derek DeCarlo earned his second win as a Golden Panther as FIU snapped their two-game losing streak. Alex Ansoleaga went -5 with two RBI and Tommy Duenas was 2-3 with a double and a triple.

Ansoleaga hit a line drive single up the middle in the bottom of the third. Bernie Gonzalez reached when he was hit by the pitch, moving Ansoleaga to second. Brad Eldred hits a RBI line drive single down the left line to bring Ansoleaga in and put the Golden Panthers on the board.

In the bottom of the fourth, Dean Adams reached first on an error made by the shortstop. Ansoleaga followed with his second hit of the game with a RBI double down the left line bringing in Adams. Adam Summerell hit a line drive down the leftfield line to bring in Ansoleaga. Summerell reached third on wild throw made by the pitcher and scored when the first baseman dropped a fall ball.

Tommy Duenas hit a triple to center field to start the Golden Panthers in the fifth innning. Summerell reached base when he was hit by pitch. Summerell was caught stealing second while Duenas stole home, for the FIU 5-0 lead.

In the seventh Kansas State got on the board. Ryan Baldwin doubled down the left field line and scored on Mark Montgomery's double to right field.

In the eighth FIU added four more runs to open the game to 9-1. Duenas doubled to right field and scored when Skip Adams reached on an error by the Wildcat shortstop. Skip Adams tagged on Summerell's sacrifice fly to center. Ansoleaga and Gonzalez scored the third and fourth runs of the inning.

In the top of the ninth Kansas State score runs. Brandon Taylor scored on Gabe's Tuttrell's RBI double and with the bases loaded FIU relief pitcher Carlos Sanchez walked in Tim Doty.

FIU will return to action next Saturday against Notre Dame at 7pm in Homestead, FL. It will be a rematch of last year's regional championship game.
