FIU sweeps Eastern Michigan series with 4-3 win

lorida International rallied late for the second straight game, and senior outfielder Adam Summerell knocked in the game winning run as FIU defeated Eastern Michigan 4-3 Sunday afternoon at University Park. Summerell, who went 3-for-5 with 3 RBI, recorded the winning hit with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.

The Golden Panthers started the scoring in the third inning. With one out, sophomore infielder Dennis Diaz drew a walk. Diaz then stole second, and Summerell brought him home with a single.

FIU extended its lead to two runs in the fourth inning when Eastern Michigan catcher Brad Hrovat overthrew second on a Solomon Frieder steal, and junior outfielder Ricardo Nanita advanced home from third.

Eastern Michigan scored a run in the fifth thanks to a sacrifice bunt. With runners on the corners, Hrovat bunted down the right field line, scoring teammate Ryan Goleski.

FIU answered in the bottom half thanks to another Summerell RBI single. Freshman infielder Luis Rivera singled to set up the play, and Diaz advanced him to second with a sacrifice bunt.

Eastern Michigan came back with a run in the sixth, when sophomore pitcher Luis Gazitua balked with a man on third, making the score 3-2. The Eagles tied the score in the ninth inning when outfielder Ryan Arnett hit his first home run of the season.

In the bottom half of the ninth inning, Frieder drew a walk and advanced when senior catcher Michael New hit a sacrifice bunt. Rivera doubled, but Frieder was thrown out at home. With two outs, Diaz drew a walk, and Summerell knocked home Rivera, the winning run.

Freshman righthander Edgar Ramirez (Miami, Southridge) got credit for the win. Florida International next takes on Miami (Fla.) Wednesday night at Mark Light Field. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast on Radiate 88, FIU's student radio station, and on La Ponderosa WWFE (670 AM).
