| PUBLIC EVENTS |
This web page was created to provide FIU students, faculty and staff, and - most importantly - the general public with information regarding astronomy related events within the community. Below is a calendar of events which is updated at the beginning of each semester and periodically throughout for special events. The FIU Astronomy Program has recently begun a concentrated effort to reach out to the community through a lecture series for those who are interested in astronomy, physics, and space exploration.
All of these events take place on the FIU University Park campus. The FIU campus is bordered by SW 8th St.
and SW 24th St. on the north and south, and by SW 107th Ave. and SW 117th Ave. on the east and west. Enter
campus through the main arches at 8th St. and 112th Ave. Turn left at the first road, and follow it around. After
the first curve, you will see the Chemistry & Physics building on your right and parking on your left. All events
are held in the Chemistry & Physics building (CP) in room 145 unless otherwise noted.
Refreshments will be served beginning at 7:45 PM and talks begin promptly at 8:00 PM.
If you just can't wait for one of our talks or star parties, you should look into the Southern Cross Astronomical Society (SCAS) . They host FREE public night viewing EVERY Saturday (weather permitting) from 8 to 10 PM at Bill Sadowski Park in south Miami. The group also hosts FREE public solar viewing EVERY Sunday (weather permitting) from 10 am - Noon at the MetroZoo. Check the Southern Cross webpage for directions and for more information on these and other events.
In additon to FIU and Southern Cross events, there are several other interesting local attractions/links which offer astronomy activities to the public:
Both the Southern Cross Astronomical Society and FIU Astronomy faculty and staff are available to local
schools and organizations to help organize, sponsor, and/or host astronomy related public events. If your group is
interested in having an astronomer as a guest speaker at your event or if you'd like to attend or need help with a star
party, or if you just need information regarding some of our events, please contact the FIU Astronomy Lab Manager
