The
Latin American Fellowship Program commenced in 1995 as ARIAH's
first major research collaboration. Final grants were awarded in 1998
for residence in 1999. The Latin American Fellowship Program provided
research opportunities at ARIAH-member and other North American
institutions for scholars from Mexico, Central and South America,
and the Caribbean. It catered to those studying the history of art
and architecture and related fields in the humanities and social sciences.

The
Latin American Fellowship Program was based on the realization that,
historically, few scholars from Latin American had applied for fellowships
or conducted research at ARIAH institutions. There was, likewise,
the recognition that Latin American colleagues were not fully aware
of the collections, library resources, or fellowship opportunities
available at ARIAH institutions. Members further agreed thatas
scholars from the United States, Canada, and Europe had missed the
opportunity to exchange ideas with colleagues from other parts of
the Americasthe fellowship program would prove advantageous
to all involved. |

|
|
| |
It
was expected that the Latin American Fellowship Program would better
familiarize scholars from Mexico, Central and South America, and the
Caribbean with ARIAH-member resources, and foster applications
to independent institutional fellowship programs. The following goals
were achieved: |
|
| |
|
|
| |
| |
Through
the Fellowship Program, ARIAH has established a contact
network of almost 1,000 scholars from across Latin America. |
|
|
|
|
| |
The
Latin American Fellowship Program received 57 applications from
ten countries and awarded a total of 18 fellowships over a five-year
period. Based on the desire to maximize benefits, additional
funding was secured to extend the program by one year. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Eight
ARIAH institutions hosted fellows and at least six ARIAH
member institutions accommodated visits by fellows hosted at
other ARIAH institutions. Through these fellowships,
research visits were also arranged at more than 50 other museums,
libraries, and research institutions in the United States, Canada,
Mexico, and Italy. |
|
|
|
|
| |
The
contacts established and the research conducted through the
Fellowship Program resulted in related activities, including
applications to other North American/ARIAH-member fellowship
programs, exhibitions, scholarly exchanges, conference papers,
and publications. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
The
Program was positively evaluated by fellowship recipients and
member institutions. |
|

|

|
|

It
is anticipated that this pilot program will serve as a model for subsequent
programs to support scholars from other regions of the world. Currently,
ARIAH is exploring the prospects of an African Fellowship Program.
Once this or other ARIAH programs have been developed, appropriate
information and application materials will be posted on this website. |
