OTH 4421 and lab– Biomechanics and Rehabilitative Approaches in OT I

OTH 5195– Occupational Therapy and Job Modification

As graduate elective course providing students with an introduction to ergonomic concepts and their application to clinical practice. It emphasizes how to use ergonomics to optimize human performance and improve health and safety. Proper body mechanics, work simplification techniques, recommendations for ergonomically-designed equipment, and job analysis are addressed in detail. This course provides students with the opportunity to develop the skills necessary to analyze work environments, identify hazards, change work habits and prevent injury/re-injury.

OTH 6009-Theories and Issues in OT

A core course providing students with the opportunity to critically evaluate the profession’s premises and deepen their understanding of how fundamental beliefs drove the profession in the past, affect present practice, and influence the future of occupational therapy.

This is the second of a two-part course. The purpose is for students to comprehend biological and physical principles needed in the evaluation and treatment of individuals using the biomechanical and rehabilitative approaches.

The purpose of this course is for students to comprehend biological and physical principles needed in the evaluation and treatment of individuals using the biomechanical and rehabilitative approaches. Students will design appropriate occupational therapy treatment programs for individuals with musculoskeletal and connective tissue disorders Adaptive equipment, purposeful activities, splints, and prosthetics will be used as tools and treatment techniques in order to prepare patients for functional activity/occupation. A lab portion will accompany this course.

OTH 5162—Adaptation to Human Occupation

The purpose of this course is to provide the students with the didactic information and the experiential opportunities needed to study the appropriate choice and use of purposeful activities and treatment techniques in the practice of occupational therapy. Students are introduced to the analysis of activities through an understanding of performance components, performance areas and performance contexts. Emphasis will be on analyzing the activities and the integration of appropriate tasks into treatment procedures. An appreciation of the many needs that activity serves following the model of exploration, competence and mastery are presented.

 

 

OTH 5405– Analysis of OT Procedures in Physical Dysfunction

A graduate elective course addressing the analysis and application of different therapeutic procedures used by occupational therapists in the physical disability arena. Lectures emphasize the theoretical aspects of a wide range of therapeutic procedures including, but not limited to: cryotherapy, conductive heat, soft tissue manipulation, electrical stimulation, biofeedback, hippotherapy, and low vision. Physiological responses to the physical agent modalities as well as indications and contraindications are discussed. Psychosocial aspects are also addressed. Laboratory sessions include clinical applications of the therapeutic procedures presented.
