1.22 ACADEMIC FREEDOM

PURPOSE

To state University support of academic freedom.

SACS Criteria Section 4.8.6.

POLICY

Academic freedom is crucial to the integrity of an educational institution. The University insists on the protection of the academic freedom. Faculty and students must be free to examine all pertinent data, to question assumptions, to be guided by the evidence of scholarly research, and to teach and publish the substance of this inquiry.

PROCEDURE

The principles of academic freedom assuring freedom in teaching, research and publication and service must be distributed to all faculty. This statement should be included in the faculty handbook.

NOTES November 22, 1995 Reviewed by Council of Deans and approved by Provost November 18, 1996 Provost sends AAPM Section 1 containing this policy to the Faculty Senate October 23, 2000 Faculty Senate comments received by Provost. February 2000 Provost staff determine that Faculty Senate suggestions are word improvements that do not require policy review and approval. June 21, 2001 Faculty Senate suggestions entered into AAPM and posted to Policy Archives.
