Presidential
Lecture Series (PLS) in the Sciences
The PLS (formerly known as the Millennium Presidential Lecture
Series in the Sciences) was started in 2001 with the help
of a generous donation from President Maidique. The three
principal goals of this lecture series are (1) to expose
FIU students
to "the world at the fore-front of science"; (2)
to accelerate education and research in scientific disciplines
via interaction with world-renowned scientists; and (3) to
afford FIU greater visibility to the outside world.
The Chairs of various science departments (BIO, CHEM, EAR,
ENV, MATH, PHYS, STAT) agreed to invite internationally respected
scientists, including Nobel Laureates, to FIU. We hope to
feature at least one Nobel Laureate per year. The speaker
is expected to deliver one general lecture that almost anyone
can understand. Some speakers may make a second presentation
specifically targeted to a limited audience. |
