LHC First Beam on 10 September 2008

September 10, 2008 will mark an important milestone in the the history of Elementary Particle Physics. On this day two counter rotating beams of protons will be injected and circulated completely around the 27 km long ring for the very first time. Soon thereafter the beams will be steered into collision and then ramped up to the initial operating energy of 10 trillion electron volts, the highest energy ever seen at a particle collider. Four large scale and unprecedented experiments are poised at various locations along the ring ready to take mountains of data that will lead to a new and never before gleaned understanding of the nature of matter, energy and very structure of the universe. The High Energy Physics group at FIU, a member of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) collaboration, will be one of the groups actively involved in the research activities at CMS.
