Atomic and Molecular Physics Group

Research Interest:

The experiment Atomic and Molecular Physics group is interested in understanding the details of the fundamental interactions between atoms and molecules. Currently this goal is being pursued along three research path:

  • The determination of absolute total scattering cross sections of metastable rare gas atoms interating with monatomic and diatomic systems.
  • The determination of final products of dissociative recombination reactions
  • The study of cold collisions using beams of laser cooled atoms.

To support the last of these research goals, the group is developping narrow line width, stable and tunable diode laser systems. The group is also developping a collisionless plasma model for the computation of electron current to a spherical satellite at high positive potential as part of the Tethered Satellite System Program for NASA.
