Research Groups

Astronomy: Members of the astronomy group have interests in the structure and evolution of close binary stars, VLA radio observations of dwarf galaxies, and multi-frequency observations of quasars and active galactic nuclei.

Biophysics: Experimental studies of temporal processing in the human eye; theoretical and computational studies of protein folding, protein-protein interactions, and laser effects on biological tissue.

Experimental Nuclear Physics: An experimental group exploring the quark and gluon substructure of matter at accelerators including the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility.

Laser and Optical Physics: An experimental group studying atom optics and quantum optics. Research projects include laser cooling and trapping of rubidium atoms, dark-hollow-beam manipulations of cold atoms, and nonlinear optical phenomena manifested by atomic coherence and interference.

Medium Energy and Nuclear Theory: A theoretical group working in weak interactions, nuclear astrophysics, nuclear reactions, and lattice field theory of QCD.

Physics Education Research: The FIU Physics Education Research Group conducts a coordinated program of research, curriculum development, and, instruction to improve the teaching and learning of physics.

Solid State Surface Physics: An experimental and theoretical group specializing in the study of the structural and electronic properties of crystals and crystal surfaces with a variety of techniques (LEED,AES,UPS,XPS,TDS,and SEM).
