Betty Morrow , Professor Emeritus
Ph.D., University of Miami, 1978
Dr. Morrow researches gender and family sociology in the context of disasters and extreme events. She focuses on the role of social and economic factors in creating disaster vulnerability and in affecting the ability of households and communities to respond and recover, particularly in women's experiences in disaster mitigation and response. Dr. Morrow is currently involved in two major research projects: one using grassroots women's groups in the Dominican Republic and Saint Lucia to conduct community vulnerability assessments and a study of the long-term effects of Hurricane Andrew on South Florida and the nation (funded by the National Science Foundation). She currently chairs a national study panel on Human and Environmental Links to Natural Disasters funded by the Heinz Center for Science, Economics and the Environment.
