     • You must be admitted as a degree-seeking student and meet the following criteria:

     • Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

     • Register with the Selective Service, if required.

     • Be enrolled at least half-time in an eligible program of studies.

How Will I Be Notified to Submit Additional Required Documents for My File?

The Financial Aid office will send you a 'Notice' indicating the status of your financial aid request. The purpose of this letter is to inform you of any additional documentation needed to complete your file. Respond immediately to any request for additional information and keep all correspondence for future reference. FIU's automated Voice Response System (VRS) provides updated information on your financial aid status. You can activate this system by calling 348-1500 using the access code received during registration.

How Is Financial Need Determined?

Financial Need is defined as the difference between the estimated cost of attendance and the amount you and your family can reasonably be expected to contribute toward your educational expenses.

How Will I Be Notified of My Eligibility?

Once your file has been completed it will be reviewed, and you will be notified whether or not you are eligible for aid. If eligible, you will be sent 'Financial Aid Award' letter listing the financial aid being offered to you. If not eligible, a letter will be sent explaining your ineligibility status.

How Do I Retain My Classes Prior to Financial Aid Checks being Released?

Your class schedule will be validated automatically if your Financial Aid Award (excluding Federal Work Study) is equal to or greater than your total tuition and fees. If not, you must pay the difference by the last day to pay.

How Do I Defer My Housing Payment?

The Housing Office will provide deferments to all students who have received an award letter by the Housing payment deadline, provided the total award amount is sufficient to cover tuition and housing costs. Students who do not have an award letter will be responsible for making payment arrangements with the Housing Office.

How Are Financial Aid Checks Disbursed?

Financial aid checks will be mailed each semester approximately one month after the 'Last Day to Pay Fees' to the address on file with the Registrar's Office. Tuition and fees, university housing charges, and all other outstanding debts will be deducted and a check for the remaining amount will be mailed to you. If your financial aid is not sufficient to cover your expenses, it is your responsibility to pay any remaining outstanding debt.

How Do I Purchase Books Prior to Checks Being Released?

The Financial Aid Office offers a Book Loan for students who have been awarded need-based or scholarship assistance to purchase books at the beginning of the semester. However, the total amount of the award for the semester (excluding CWS and Unsubsidized loans) must be sufficient to cover tuition, fees and the Book Loan. The application is sent to all eligible students and must be returned approximately one month prior to the start of classes.

How Can I Pay for My Courses If I Am Not a Financial Aid Recipient?

Short Term Tuition loans which are available only during registration periods, are available to students who are unable to pay their fees by the deadline. The amount of the loan is limited based on enrollment status and does not cover all charges.

How Can I Discuss My Financial Situation With a Counselor?

A Financial Aid Administrator is available Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. to assist students with special problems, technical questions, and special circumstances.

How Can I Renew My Financial Aid Each Academic Year?

Financial aid awards are not automatically renewed. You must complete a 'new' or 'renewal' Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each year and submit it by the established deadline. The FAFSA is available in January for the following academic year, which begins each Fall semester. The priority deadline is March 1 for the following Fall semester. All required documents must be received by this date.
