Mission Statement
The mission is to supply the South Florida region, where
tourism and international trade constitute the basis of the
economy, with professionals fluent in the language, culture,
and literature of the Spanish-speaking world. Graduates of
the program are ready to enter Spanish graduate programs,
teach at elementary or high school levels or work in
hospitality and international business. Additionally, we
have the mission of equipping students with linguistic and
cultural competencies that can be a vital supplement and
complement to a second major, affording them broader
professional horizons and making them more competitive in
the globalized market.
Student Learning Outcomes
FIU Spanish graduates should be able to do the following:
Content/Discipline Knowledge
Demonstrate knowledge of major components of
language structure including major social and regional
variations.
Describe the cultural, socio-economic, and political fabric
of the Spanish speaking world.
Apply the fundamentals of critical theory to the analysis of
discourse and literary texts.
Describe the general social, historical, and philosophical
contexts in which literary works have developed and explain
trends in literary history.
Critical Thinking
Demonstrate competence in the analysis and interpretation of
literary works from various genres, periods, and traditions
in Spanish.
Apply analysis and critical thinking to cultural,
socio-economic, and political affairs in the
Spanish-speaking world.
Oral and Written Communication
Demonstrate competence in the correct and formal usage of
written Spanish.
Present ideas clearly and effectively in public
presentations in Spanish.
Demonstrate proficiency in the pragmatics of expository
writing.
Demonstrate competence in the standard Modern Language
Association (MLA) writing style.
