Mission Statement
The mission is to supply the South Florida region, where
tourism and international trade constitute the basis of the
economy, with professionals fluent in the language, culture,
and literature of the French-speaking world. Graduates of
the program are ready to enter French graduate programs,
teach at elementary or high school levels or work in
hospitality and international business. Additionally, we
have the mission of equipping students with linguistic and
cultural competencies that can be a vital supplement and
complement to a second major, affording them broader
professional horizons and making them more competitive in
the globalized market.
Student Learning Outcomes
FIU French graduates should be able to do the following:
Content/Discipline Knowledge
Demonstrate familiarity with the major
components of language, such phonology, morphology, syntax,
and semantics.
Describe the cultural, socio-economic, and political fabric
of France or another French-speaking country.
Apply the fundamentals of critical theory to the analysis of
discourse and literary texts.
Critical Thinking
Demonstrate competence in analysis and interpretation of
literary works from various genres, periods, or traditions
in French.
Apply analysis and critical thinking to cultural,
socio-economic, and political affairs in the French-speaking
world.
Oral and Written Communication
Demonstrate competence in the correct and formal usage of
written French.
Present ideas clearly and effectively in public
presentations in French.
Demonstrate proficiency in expository writing.
