These tables give percentages of potential voters who answered "strongly favor" to the question "How do you feel about controls over the sale of handguns -- do you strongly favor, mostly favor, mostly oppose, or strongly oppose them?".
The trend over time shows increasing polarization on this issue. Also, the percentage of all voters strongly favoring handgun control has dropped over the past year from 49 to 44 percent, indicating perhaps effective work by anti-gun control groups as well as a year having passed since the Columbine shootings.
Undecided voters are positioned the same way with respect to those planning to vote for republican and democratic candidates the same way over the three years shown here. Their intermediate position indicates neither candidate will be helped or hurt much by this issue with undecided voters.
