US policy toward Cuba and presidential vote plans in Florida

These tables give percentages of potential voters who answered "promote better relations with Cuba" to the question "What do you think American policy toward Cuba should be? Should the United States intensify its opposition to the Castro government in Cuba, should it keep things about the same as they are now, or should it try to promote better relations with Cuba?".

The past year has seen a significant drop in the number of people favoring promoting better relations with Cuba and more polarization between Bush and Gore voters. Both of these changes may well be consequencies of the Elian Gonzalez situation. As the recent FIU/Cuba Poll has documented (http://www.fiu.edu/orgs/ipor/cuba2000) the years events have occasioned a major increase among Cuban-Americans in opposition to Gore and in favor of Bush. Also, in that poll Cuban's and non-Cuban's alike agreed that the Elian situation hurt the Cuban community in South Florida. But there is also evidence that it increased cynicism about the Cuban government among people who previously not paid much attention to Cuba.
