Current year news items
November 14, 2007. Jungmin Lee has been awarded a seed research grant from the W.E. Upjohn Institute for Employment Research to study "Estimating the Gender Wage Gap with Gender-Specific Measurement Errors."
November 11, 2007. This weekend, Peter Thompson presented his paper, "Stars and Misfits" [coauthored with Jing Chen and Tom Astebro] at the Roundtable for Engineering Entrepreneurship Research at Georgia Tech.
November 8, 2007. Mira Wilkins reports two new publications: "The Experience of Foreign Multinational Enterprise in Japan, 1946-1974" appears in the Journal of Economics and Business Administration, 196:1 (July 2007), pages 23-47, and  "Multinational Enterprise in Insurance: an Historical Overview," was published in Peter Borscheid and Robin Pearson, eds., Internationalisation and Globalisation of the Insurance Industry in the 19th and 20th Centuries (Zurich: Swiss Re, 2007), pages 4-26.
In September, Mira was an invited guest of the Peterson Institute for International Economics  in connection with a Conference held there celebrating the work of Edward M. Graham. On October 24, she was a commentator at a session, sponsored by the FIU Summit of the Americas Center, which hosted the visit of Dr. Marcelo Maria Giugale, Director of Economic Policy and Poverty Reduction Programs for Latin America at World Bank.
November 6, 2007. In October, Irma de Alonso received the University’s Excellence in Teaching Award. This is the third year in a row that Irma's outstanding teaching has been recognized.
November 1, 2007.Congratulations to Mihaela Pintea and Brice Dupoyet, now the proud parents of Cécile Gabriella Dupoyet. Cécile will be teaching Applied Macro in Summer A, 2008.
October 30, 2007. Peter Thompson attended the recent NBER Entrepreneurship Working Group meeting in Boston, where his paper, “Entrepreneurs: Jacks of All Trades or Hobos?” was presented by his co-author, Tom Astebro.
September 4, 2007.  The latest issue (vol. 6 , issue 3) of the Review of Network Economics, is a special issue on "Dynamics, Efficiency and Network Industries" that addresses issues related to the dynamics of firm behavior and efficiency in network industries. The special issue includes seven papers plus a detailed introduction of each paper by the guest editor Jeffrey Bernstein. In addition, one of the papers, "Irreversible Investment, Capital Costs and Productivity Growth: Implications for Telecommunications", was written by Jeff and his co-author Theofanis Mamuneas.
August 27, 2007. Jeffrey Bernstein's paper, "Public Infrastructure, Input Efficiency and Productivity Growth in the Canadian Food Processing Industry" [co-authored with Theofanis Mamuneas], has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Productivity Analysis.
August 23, 2007. Congratulations to Dmitriy Krichevskiy, who has been awarded a Kauffman Doctoral Student Assistantship funded by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation and the Eugenio Pino Entrepreneurship Center.
August 14, 2007. Jeffrey Bernstein's paper "Irreversible Investment, Capital Costs and Productivity Growth: Implications for Telecommunications" [co-authored with Theofanis Mamuneas], has been accepted for publication by the Review of Network Economics, and is expected to appear in volume 6, issue 3, September 2007.
August 6, 2007. Cem Karayalcin's paper "Divided We Stand United We Fall: The Hume-North-Jones mechanism for the Rise of Europe" has been accepted for publication by the International Economic Review.
August 4, 2007. Cem Karayalcin's paper "Exchange Rate Pass-Through and Relative Prices: An Industry-Level Empirical Investigation" [coauthored with P. Bhattacharya and D. Thomakos], has been accepted for publication by the Journal of International Money and Finance.
July 18, 2007. Peter Thompson's paper, "Desperate Housewives? Communication Difficulties and the Dynamics of Marital (un)Happiness", has been accepted for publication by The Economic Journal.

June 28, 2007. We are pleased to announce that Prasad Bidarkota has been promoted to Associate Professor with tenure.

June 27, 2007. Prasad Bidarkota presented "Asset Pricing with Incomplete Information and
Fat Tails", [co-authored with Brice Dupoyet and Huston McCulloch], at the North American Summer Meetings of the Econometric Society held at Duke University June 21-24. He also presented this paper earlier at the 13th International Conference on Computing in Economics and Finance held at the University of Montreal June 14-16.
June 26, 2007. Peter Thompson's paper "How Much did the Liberty Shipbuilders Forget?" appears in the latest issue of Management Science , vol. 53, No. 6, pp. 908-918 (June 2007).
May 1, 2007. "Technological Complexity and Economic Growth", by Mihaela Pintea and Peter Thompson appears in the latest issue of the Review of Economics Dynamics, Vol. 10, No. 2, pp. 276-293 (April 2007).

April 27, 2007. Prasad Bidarkota's paper, "Intrinsic Bubbles and Fat Tails in Stock Prices: A Note" [co-authored with Brice Dupoyet], appears in the latest issue of Macroeconomic Dynamics, Vol.11, No.3 (June 2007), 405-422.
April 22, 2007.  Richard Chisik presented his paper "Do Preferential Trade Agreements Created Under the GATT 1979 Enabling Clause (Paragraph 2(c)) Generate Economic Integration and Stability? at the Mid-West International Economics Meetings at the University of Minnesota this weekend, the International Industrial Organization Conference in Savannah , Georgia last weekend, and at the Regional Integration Network Meetings at the Universidad de las Américas in Puebla, Mexico in January.
April 20, 2007. Jeffrey Bernstein's paper, "X-Factor Updating and Total Factor Productivity Growth: The Case of Peruvian Telecommunications, 1996-2003", [with Juan Hernandez, Jose Maria Rodriguez, and Agustin Ros], which appears in the Journal of Regulatory Economics, volume 30, pp. 316-342 (November 2006), has now been published online. Jeff has also been appointed to the Program Committee of the International Telecommunications Society's Congress to be held June 2008 in Montreal.
April 20, 2007. Congratulations to Michelle Zapiain, IR and Economics '07 and president of the Undergraduate Economics Association, who  has been awarded the prestigious Pamela Harriman Foreign Service Fellowship. The fellowship provides outstanding undergraduates from across the nation the opportunity to spend a summer in a professional position with the United States Department of State. Only three fellowships are awarded each year; one is reserved for a student of the College of William and Mary, and the other two are available for undergraduates from universities from around the nation. Michelle is the first recipient of the award from a Florida university. She will be working in the Office of the Secretary of State during the summer.
April 20, 2007. Lots of news about Jeff Czajkowski today. Jeff took first place in the Business, Finance, and Economics category of the 2007 FIU Graduate Student Association Scholarly Forum held on April 6th.  This is the 3rd year in a row that a PhD student from the economics department has placed first at the scholarly forum. He was also awarded one of eight 2007 TA Excellence In Teaching Awards. Jeff is presenting his paper entitled "Is it Time to Go Yet? Dynamically Modeling Hurricane Evacuations" at the first annual Symposium on Disasters hosted by the Roosevelt Institution at Tulane University on Apr 20-21. Finally, Jeff will be joining Austin College as an assistant professor this Fall.
April 15, 2007.  Peter Thompson presented "Sorting, Selection, and Industry Shakeouts", which is co-authored with Mihaela Pintea, at the International Industrial Organization Conference in Savannah this weekendIn the last couple of weeks, Peter Thompson also presented "Desperate Housewives", at the University of Calgary and at Indiana University.
April 9, 2007.  Congratulations to Ioana Popovici, who successfully defended her dissertation, "The Effects of Intellectual Property Rights on Knowledge Spillovers and Innovation: An Empirical Investigation." In May, Ioana will be joining the Health Economics Research Group at the University of Miami as a Senior Research Associate.
March 28, 2007.  Peter Thompson has been appointed an associate editor for Management Science.
March 21, 2007.  Peter Thompson 's paper, "Founder Quality and Firm Performance: Implications for Local Development Strategies", appears in The Australian Economic Review, Volume 40, pp. 97-105 (March 2007).
March 19, 2007.  Peter Thompson 's paper, "Spinoff-Entry in High-Tech Industries: Motives and Consequences" [with Steven Klepper], appears in  Perspectives on Innovation (edited by F. Malerba and S. Brusoni), Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, pp. 187-218.
February 15, 2007.  Peter Thompson was one of eight FIU faculty named a 2007 Kauffman Professor by the Eugenio Pino and Family Global Entrepreneurship Center.

February 2, 2007. Mahadev Bhat's paper, "Management of a Transboundary Wildlife Population: A Self-Enforcing Cooperative Agreement with Renegotiation and Variable Transfer Payments" [co-authored with R. G.
