ACCESS & EQUITY COMMITTEE

PURPOSE

The University Access and Equity Committee is appointed by the President to monitor the implementation of the University’s Affirmative Action Plan, and to guide and advise the Office of Equal Opportunity Programs.  Its membership includes representation from the faculty, Administrative and Professional (A&P) staff, and University Support Personnel Services (USPS).

SUBCOMMITTEES ROLE
Disabled Student and Employee Access To monitor the University’s buildings, parking lots, walkways, equipment, etc., to ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.  The Subcommittee identifies access and safety issues and makes recommendations to appropriate administrative units.
Diversity Advisory To provide input into the direction of the University's Diversity Initiative.
Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Allies To work toward the expansion on the University’s nondiscrimination policy to include sexual orientation as a covered class, and to improve the campus climate for gay and lesbian students, faculty and staff.
Minority Student/Female Climate Issues To review admissions and retention efforts, particularly as they impact on minority students.
Quality of Life and Work for Faculty, A&P, and USPS To identify quality of life issues for all staff and to assess the perceptions of university climate in a broad range of areas.  Activities may include the gathering of data regarding workplace satisfaction and quality of work-life, perceptions of institutional and individual sensitivity, study of faculty tenure and promotion, salary, and other related issues.  http://www.fiu.edu/~wests/welcomewagon.html
Title IX/Gender Equity To review programmatic and fiscal activities of the Department of Athletics and to ensure gender equity in all athletic activities.
