Research Interests:

My research involves the study of the hydroxy carotenoids (xanthophylls), their absorption, transport, and metabolism in humans and other animal systems. Our group has demonstrated that the carotenoids lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin are the principal components of the macular pigment and that the presence of these carotenoids in the retina is correlated to a reduced risk for Age-related Macular Degeneration.
