Dr. Kelly Rein,who was just awarded an NIH Grant in the amount of $1,002,844;

Dr. Alex Mebel whose NSF grant has been continued (link);

And also to Dr. Jose Almirall who received an NIJ grant in the amount of $249,446.

Welcome! We are a Department of 29 faculty and 11 staff personnel. We have grown in size tremendously in recent years and look forward to further growth in the future. We have state-of-the-art instrumentation, our faculty receive outside funding that includes support for graduate and undergraduate research assistants, and our students regularly contribute to research publications in top scientific journals.

We initiated a PhD program in 1997. The emphasis of this program is in the environmental and biomedical areas, although research is performed by our faculty in all the traditional areas of chemistry.

We currently have a variety of undergraduate and graduate degree programs. At the undergraduate level, we offer an ACS-certified BS in chemistry for students interested in a career in this field, and a BA in chemistry which is primarily for students registered in one of the pre-professional programs. Pre-medical majors make up a large portion of these latter students.

Students interested in the forensic sciences are able to enroll in the Forensic Science Certificate Program and we have plans to introduce discipline-associated concentrations for each of the undergraduate degrees.

At the graduate level, we offer a MS and a PhD in chemistry. An interdisciplinary MS degree in Forensic Science is also offered as well as a PhD with Forensics emphasis.

Our students also benefit from several institutes and centers housed at FIU.

Additionally, collaborative research is performed between Chemistry faculty and faculty in the other Departments.

Step into our Web pages and explore the possibilities we have to offer. I think you will be impressed. If you are looking into obtaining a degree in chemistry, I hope you will take a closer look and seriously consider our Department.

Best Wishes,

Stanislaw Wnuk, Ph.D.

Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry Chairman
