Aerogel is the lightest solid ever constructed.
 

              Here the translucency of aerogel is readily apparent; notice the blurring of the edge of the table.

Aerogel is a desiccant, that is it absorbs moisture
and thus feels dry and flaky to the touch.
 

  Aerogel also acts as an insulator; here the flame
does not penetrate the aerogel, leaving the flower
unharmed.
