In the coming weeks, FIU will be asking for your participation in a grass-roots campaign to let the decision-makers in our state know just how much community support exists for an FIU School of Medicine. As the Florida Board of Governors (BOG) ponders the best way for the state to alleviate the anticipated future doctor shortage and to educate competent, locally trained physicians, three state universities have submitted proposals to the BOG for consideration of a medical school: FIU, Univesity of Central Florida and Florida Atlantic University. (The FAU proposal involves expanding an existing partnership the school currently has with the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.)
All three institutions have made their presentations to the BOG, and it is anticipated that this matter will be taken up again by the board at their May meeting. There are many factors that the board will weigh in making its decision as to how to proceed; community support is one such factor.
As the university decides how best to show that its alumni
support an FIU School of Medicine, we will communicate further
with you. Whether we ask you to sign an online petition, send
a form letter or make a quick phone call, I hope that you will
join with me in creating a “loud and proud” show
of support for this most important initiative and for your
university.
