June 18 Fishing Tournament promises day of fun

Pull out those fishing poles and get ready for some fun in the sun. The FIU Alumni Association Fishing Tournament, one of the most popular events of the year, is right around the corner.

The Tournament will be held on Sat., June 18, at the Miami Beach Marina. Last year’s event featured 35 boats and this year, the Alumni Association expects to have 50 boats – the maximum allowed – with more than 200 people. In addition, the tournament has raised $23,000 in sponsorships and welcomed School of Hospitality and Tourism Management Dean Joseph West to the tournament planning committee.

“We are really growing the tournament,” said Randi West, CMP, assistant director of events and outreach for Alumni Relations. “We have really taken it to a professional level.”

The annual Fishing Tournament raises money for the Alumni Association scholarship fund for FIU students.

The tournament begins at 7 a.m. with lines in at 3 p.m. Weigh-in will be at 3:30 p.m. at Monty’s by a marine biologist. There will also be a dock party at Monty’s Raw Bar on South Beach, 300 Alton Road. Cash and prizes worth $5,000 will be awarded.

Alumni are encouraged to sign up soon for tournament. For more information, please contact Randi N. West, CMP, at 305-348-1009 or westr@fiu.edu.
