Alumni a hit with students at Network for Success panel discussion

Dozens of FIU students turned out to hear three distinguished FIU alumni share their career experiences in a Network for Success panel discussion held earlier this month at FIU-University Park.

Ana Maria Polo ’84, Gonzalo Acevedo ‘91 and Carlos Becerra ‘98 answered questions from the students about how their Arts & Sciences degrees have helped them in their respective careers. The students in attendance responded so well to the alumni that it is anticipated more events like this will be held in the future.

Many thanks to Polo, Acevedo and Becerra for volunteering their time and sharing their experiences with current students.

Here are brief bios on the three alumni who participated:

  • Ana Maria Polo – This successful attorney has captured the hearts and minds of people in our community through her television show on Telemundo. Polo’s show, which centers around the practice of law, brings real-life issues and solutions into the homes of her viewers. Ms. Polo discussed how her Arts & Sciences degree afforded her the opportunity to attend law school, which has been the foundation of her successful career.
  • Gonzalo Acevedo – A successful banker and active volunteer in our community, Mr. Acevedo is vice president of The Private Bank of America. As an employee in the private sector, he focused on the relationship between private industry and education (one cannot exist without the other) and the importance of this enduring relationship.
  • Carlos Becerra – A former president of FIU’s Student Government Association, Mr. Becerra is executive assistant to Frank Bolanos, a member of the Miami-Dade County Public School Board. As a government employee, Mr. Becerra discussed how Arts & Sciences degrees can be the keystone in successful civil-service careers.
