DISSERTATION PROPOSAL RESPONSIBLITIES
OFFICE OF RESEARCH AND
GRADUATE STUDIES (ORGS)
- Provide assistance framing the research questions
and preparing the proposal as requested by the Chair and/or the Student.
- Disseminate information about forms, timelines,
and resource people.
- Read the three chapter proposal when it is
submitted and give feedback to the Chair.
- Send proposal out to faculty for blind review if
deemed appropriate.
- Give integrated feedback to the Chair.
- Be available for reciprocal clarification and
consultation.
- Upon submission of the completed Form B,
authorize the scheduling of the oral defense.
- Disseminate the oral defense proposal and publicize
the oral defense.
- Make sure that the 5-page summary of the proposal
is ready to submit to UGS.
- Submit the signed D-3 and 5-page summary of proposal
to University Graduate School (UGS).
DISSERTATION CHAIRS
- Be a scholarly leader and a research mentor for,
and a collaborator with the Student.
- Work with the Student on identifying the topic,
make sure the proposal is well developed from a scholarly point of view,
and is appropriately formatted.
- Make the Student aware of forms, timelines, and
resource people.
- Submit the proposal and Form B to the COE-ORGS,
and obtain feedback.
- Work with the Student in revising the three
chapters while seeking consulting help from colleagues if desired.
- When confident in the quality of the proposal,
send it to committee members, seeking their feedback.
- Work with the Student to implement committee
members’ suggestions.
- Submit the updated Form B and (revised) three
chapters back to the ORGS, and obtain authorization to schedule proposal
defense.
- Schedule and conduct the proposal defense session
in a manner that is open and accessible to the community of scholars in
the COE.
- Help the Student prepare a 5-page summary of the
proposal to submit to University
Graduate School.
DISSERTATION COMMITTEE
MEMBERS
- Individually, provide consulting assistance to
the Chair and the Student during the entire process.
- Overall quality control of the proposal. The
committee is to ultimately certify that the student is ready for implementing
the proposed project.
- Prior to the oral defense, provide feedback regarding
the three chapters, and request changes, if needed. Follow
up prior to or at the defense to make sure the changes were implemented.
- During the proposal defense/exam be both
intellectually challenging and supportive.
- Based on the Student’s performance at the
defense, make a decision as to whether the proposal passes as is, passes
with minor or major revisions, or does not pass.
- Be available to help the Chair and the Student
implement requested proposal revisions.
STUDENTS
- Be aware of both the College
of Education and University Graduate School
appropriate timelines and forms.
- Under the supervision of the Dissertation Chair,
develop and present the three chapter proposal, seek feedback, and
implement the requested changes.
- Defend the proposed project in a professional and
effective manner.
- Prepare a 5-page summary of the proposal to be
submitted to UGS along with Form D-3.
