Brief Description of the Program:

       The Master of Science in Urban Education is a graduate program at Florida International University's College of Education under the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies. The program is designed to provide specialized knowledge and practice in areas related to urban multicultural contexts in an effort to enhance the effectiveness of educators serving in diverse urban settings. The Urban Education program offers three specialty tracks from which participants may select one.

Multicultural/TESOL

This specialty track develops the skills of educators to work with linguistically and culturally diverse populations while providing an opportunity to fulfill State requirements for add-on ESOL endorsement. It promotes the development of teachers as effective change agents and instructional leaders.


Instruction in Urban Settings

This specialty track emphasizes the development of effective teaching skills and dispositions required for the effective instruction of culturally diverse students in urban schools. It prepares teachers for rewarding careers in urban contexts.

Learning Technologies

This specialty track is designed to provide practicing and prospective teachers with the necessary knowledge, skills, and dispositions to effectively utilize computers and related technologies to facilitate teaching and learning in diverse settings.

Additional Requirements for International Students:
  • Foreign graduate applicants are accepted subject to space and fiscal limitations.
  • Must be academically eligible for further study in their own country.
  • Must demonstrate proficiency in the English language by presenting a minimum score of 550 or higher paper-based and a minimum score of 213 computer-based on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
  • Applicants who hold an undergraduate degree from an institution within the United States or other English speaking countries are not required to submit TOEFL.
