Brief Description of the Program:

       This Masters Program in Special Education is for students who hold an undergraduate degree in special education from Florida International University. A student with an undergraduate degree in special education from another institution must plan a program with an academic advisor to ensure having the entry skills for this program.

       This program is a total of 36 credits . It has a common core of 27 credits in advanced areas of special education, plus a choice of 9 credits in an area of concentration.

       Although this is not a certification program, professional certificate programs are available in a number of specialized areas. Consult the program faculty for further information.

Major Program Competencies : The major competencies in the Master's Degree program in special education are an extension and refinement of those developed by the student in the undergraduate special education curriculum, and:
  • Assessment of learning through observation and ongoing monitoring techniques
  • Advanced theory and research in special education
  • Integration of assessment, curriculum, and instruction
  • Curriculum planning and innovation including staffing and IEP development
  • Supervision and leadership of special education units
  • Consultation skills
  • Instructional technology

Application Requirements:

  • A GPA of 3.0 or higher GPA in junior and senior year
  • A valid Florida Teaching Certificate in special education (if applicant does not hold a valid FL teaching certificate, all certification requirement in addition to degree requirements must be met.)
  • Three letters of recommendation (at least one from an academic sources and one from work or volunteer experience
  • Well written autobiographical statement.
  • GRE is no longer required
It should be understood that meeting minimal qualifications DOES NOT automatically ensure acceptance. Candidates are admitted by action of the Department's Graduate Admissions Committee. Criteria for program acceptance include:
  • Undergraduate grade point average during the junior and senior years
  • Work and volunteer experience
  • Quality and source of letters of recommendation
  • Candidate's career aspirations and goals

Additional Requirements for International Students:

  • Foreign students must demonstrate a TOEFL score of at least 500.
