The
Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation offers Master
of Science degree in Exercise and Sport Sciences with tracks in:
Athletic Training/Sports Medicine, and Exercise Physiology.
Advanced Athletic Training/Sports Medicine :
The
curriculum is a two-year Advanced Master's degree track within the
Exercise and Sport Science Program housed within the Health, Physical
Education, and Recreation Department of the College of Education. The
program is seeking accreditation by the National Athletic Trainers'
Association (NATA) as a "post-certification" graduate program.
Applicants who are NATA Board of Certification (NATABOC) certified or
eligible to sit for the NATABOC certifying examination will be
considered for acceptance into the program. Special admission for
applicants with other qualifications will be considered on an
individual basis. The program consists of thirty-six (36) credit hours
of study with a required independent research project or "treatise".
The athletic training faculty and staff at Florida International
University are committed to providing you with advanced knowledge,
practical skills, and clinical experience that will improve your
marketability in the increasingly competitive field of Athletic
Training.
Exercise Physiology :
The
graduate specialization in exercise physiology is designed to prepare
individuals to work in the fields of exercise testing in a supervisory
capacity and in cardiac rehabilitation as a designer of exercise
rehabilitation programs.
The
program will focus on the physiological effects of exercise and
training with application to improvement of health and functional
capacity of hospitalized and non-hospitalized individuals with heart
disease. The program will emphasize the role of exercise in diagnosis,
prevention, and rehabilitation heart disease.
The
program will enable students to develop the competencies required by
the American College of Sports Medicine for certification as an
Exercise Specialist, a Health Fitness Director, and a Program Director.
Provisions will be made to enable those students entering the program
without an Exercise Test Technologist Certification and a
Health/Fitness Instructor Certification to develop those prerequisite
competencies.
Strength and Conditioning :
The
Strength and Conditioning option is offered within the Exercise
Physiology Program. The courses offered are designed to give the
student both the theoretical and practical application of skills and
knowledge required to work in a supervisory capacity the field of
Strength and Conditioning. The program takes an expanded view of
strength training as it relates to all populations including athletes,
fitness enthusiasts, sedentary individuals and special cases. Courses
are geared as both preparation courses for certification and extensions
of applied research and field application. Since the field of strength
training is so diverse and continually changing, courses are frequently
updated to reflect the current industry practices. In addition,
students will take classes in advanced application and program
administration. It is expected that the student will be involved in
research and developmental aspects of strength and conditioning.
Florida
International University has been recognized by the National Strength
and Conditioning Association (NSCA) as offering a program that prepares
individuals to work in the field of strength and conditioning.
