Brief Description of the Program:

The Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation offers Master of Science degree in Exercise and Sport Sciences with tracks in: Athletic Training/Sports Medicine, and Exercise Physiology.

Advanced Athletic Training/Sports Medicine :

The curriculum is a two-year Advanced Master's degree track within the Exercise and Sport Science Program housed within the Health, Physical Education, and Recreation Department of the College of Education. The program is seeking accreditation by the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) as a "post-certification" graduate program. Applicants who are NATA Board of Certification (NATABOC) certified or eligible to sit for the NATABOC certifying examination will be considered for acceptance into the program. Special admission for applicants with other qualifications will be considered on an individual basis. The program consists of thirty-six (36) credit hours of study with a required independent research project or "treatise". The athletic training faculty and staff at Florida International University are committed to providing you with advanced knowledge, practical skills, and clinical experience that will improve your marketability in the increasingly competitive field of Athletic Training.

Exercise Physiology :

The graduate specialization in exercise physiology is designed to prepare individuals to work in the fields of exercise testing in a supervisory capacity and in cardiac rehabilitation as a designer of exercise rehabilitation programs.

The program will focus on the physiological effects of exercise and training with application to improvement of health and functional capacity of hospitalized and non-hospitalized individuals with heart disease. The program will emphasize the role of exercise in diagnosis, prevention, and rehabilitation heart disease.

The program will enable students to develop the competencies required by the American College of Sports Medicine for certification as an Exercise Specialist, a Health Fitness Director, and a Program Director. Provisions will be made to enable those students entering the program without an Exercise Test Technologist Certification and a Health/Fitness Instructor Certification to develop those prerequisite competencies.

Strength and Conditioning :

The Strength and Conditioning option is offered within the Exercise Physiology Program. The courses offered are designed to give the student both the theoretical and practical application of skills and knowledge required to work in a supervisory capacity the field of Strength and Conditioning. The program takes an expanded view of strength training as it relates to all populations including athletes, fitness enthusiasts, sedentary individuals and special cases. Courses are geared as both preparation courses for certification and extensions of applied research and field application. Since the field of strength training is so diverse and continually changing, courses are frequently updated to reflect the current industry practices. In addition, students will take classes in advanced application and program administration. It is expected that the student will be involved in research and developmental aspects of strength and conditioning.
